Additions:
I had been watching this rig since its announcement at Dayton several years ago, but the price was a bit high and there were reports of a few early problems, so I waited. This year at Hamvention 2007 the price was much better - and the inclusion of the remote brackets and cable, combined with the K3 and Flex 5000 not being available yet, I decided to go ahead and enjoy the IC-7000 till the bugs get worked out of the K3 and Flex offerings. My IC706 Mark-II (non G) has been working in portable and mobile use for a long time, and this IC7K is a definite upgrade for that!

Revision [1846]

Edited on 2007-06-10 18:44:05 by AlanB [settable fast tuning rate]

Additions:
One nice feature the IC-7000 has is the ability to adjust the fast tuning rate of the rig. Instead of the usual 1khz rate (awfully fast, can't tune in all signals), you can set it for 0.1khz per increment, which works great to both cover a lot of ground and tune in any signal within plus or minus 50 hz. The ProIII will also do this. To do this select the fast rate with the TS button, then press and hold the TS button to enter set mode).

Icom IC-7000

The Icom IC-7000 is an interesting radio. Icom packed some of the ProIII features into an IC-706 sized box. There are many articles on the net about the features of this rig, so I'm no going to make yet another feature laundry list. Instead I'll cover some of the interesting highlights from my perspective.

The out-of-the box settings on this rig are better than many others - the rig is basically usable without a lot of fiddling. Transmit audio sounds reasonably good without fiddling or changing things.

The multiple meters at once feature is very nice. Displays S-Meter, Power out, ALC, Compression and SWR at once!!

The temperature of the rig is interesting. Even at a measured 1.3A of receive current the rig gets warm. It is not hot enough to cook on as some reviewers would have you believe, but it is warm. In long QSOs it does not seem to get warmer since the fan comes on during transmit.

Voice Operated Squelch is really nice to have on an HF rig. The IC-7000 has it. Icom thinks this is only used on VHF/UHF SSB, but if it works properly it is quite useful on HF as well. I have not tested this much yet to see how it performs on HF, but am glad the feature is there. The ProIII does not have this, but the IC-746Pro does.

This rig works well with the LdgZ11ProTuner. It also is designed to work well with the IcomAh4Tuner.

This rig works well with CW. On the narrowest receive filter (50 hz) the signals get too soft, but at 150 hz they are fine.
